Scope and Contents
This bulk of this small collection of personal material from members
of the Gibbon family of Philadelphia, 1901-1929, is comprised
of letters of Marjorie Young Gibbon and surgeon John H. Gibbon
concerning their engagement, daughter Marjorie, and Gibbon's
1905 transatlantic voyages. The collection also includes letters
of the young John Heysham Gibbon, physician and inventor of
the heart lung machine.

Scope and Contents
The collection contains a set of schematic drawings and plans
of the heart lung machine developed in the 1950s by the International
Business Machines Corporation for John Heysham Gibbon. The
plans are numbered, 288-0100 to 2880314 and 288-0350 to 288-0469,
and filed in numerical sequence. The collection contains 344
items.The plans, produced from 1950 to 1954 and approved in 1954, concern
Model III of the machine and incorporate minor refinements and
design changes on Model...

Overview
Katharine Rosenbaum Guest Boucot Sturgis was born in Philadelphia in 1903, and graduated from Woman’s Medical College of Philadelphia in 1940.Katharine R. Sturgis's connection with the College of Physicians of Philadelphia began in 1951 when she was elected a Fellow. In 1972, after more than twenty years as a member, Sturgis became the College's first woman president. A year later, she was forced to retire due to health problems. Sturgis died in Philadelphia in 1987....
