Scope and Contents

Album of photographs, numbered 97-190, with descriptions by S. Suzuki of injury and treatment of Japanese sailors and Russian prisoners of war, 1904-1905; includes initials of sailors and officers and battle and date on which wounds were received. Photographs primarily depict amputations, burns, and gunshot wounds. Includes typed letter signed, 1909 Feb. 19, of James Evelyn Pilcher concerning provenance of album.

Biographical / Historical

Shigemichi Suzuki, Japanese physician and naval surgeon, was an 1887 licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians, London, and member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was Deputy Inspector-General of Hospitals and Fleets in the Imperial Japanese Navy, surgeon at the Tokio Charity Hospital, and professor to the Naval Medical College, Tokyo.
