E. A. Santee ledgers

Scope and Contents
The collection contains three ledgers from the medical practice
of E. A. Santee in Luzerne County, Pa., at Hobbie, 1870-1877,
with some account settlements to 1889, and Wapwallopen, 1886-1905,
with some account settlements to 1911. The ledger entries list
patient's name, date, and fee. Each volume contains an index
to the ledger accounts. The two ledgers from Wapwallopen give
brief summaries of the treatment or reason for visit, while
the Hobbie ledger refers to accounts in E. A. Santee's daybooks,
two of which, volumes "A" and "C" form part of MSS 2/0223-01.
Ledger "A" from Wapwallopen also contains notes on the medical education
of [Charles] LaMotte Santee (1876-1963) at Jefferson Medical
College.

Biographical / Historical
Ephraim A. Santee was born in Luzerne County, Pa., in 1838.
In 1862, he began to study medicine with A. L. Custer, a Conyngham,
Pa., practitioner. Santee attended the 18631864, 1864-1865,
and 1868-1869 sessions of Jefferson Medical College; he received
his M.D. from Jefferson in 1869.
Santee practiced medicine in several towns in Luzerne County. From 1865 to May 1866, he practiced in Lehman, then moved to Shickshinny. In October 1870, he began to practice in Hollenback and, in May 1872, Hobbie. Santee entered into a partnership with a Dr. Price in 1878. In 1886, he moved his practice to Wapwallopen. E. A. Santee died of senile debility at Wapwallopen on 16 September 1915.

funds donated by the Samuel Lewis Circle by the Historical Collections
of the Library of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia
from Carmen D. Valentino Rare Books and Manuscripts on 3 February
1992.
