Scope and Contents note
The J. Harold Austin papers contain general professional correspondence, as well as correspondence from Austin’s time as the Executive Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia including correspondence concerning the Building Fund and the Library Fund. The general correspondence folder also includes the constitution of the John Morgan Society, "General principles of organization of the University of Pennsylvania Group Diagnostic Clinic," material related to the John Herr Musser Department of Research Medicine, and printed material. Also included in this collection are minutes of the Medical Board of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania; correspondence and reports from the Medical Department of the Brookhaven National Laboratory visiting committee; surveys of hospital laboratories; reports related to the Therapeutic Trials Committee of the American Medical Association; and writings. Writings include notes, charts, calculations, and typescripts of articles and course materials on statistical analysis of clinical trials.

Biographical/Historical note
J. Harold Austin (1883-1952) was a professor of research medicine at the University of Pennsylvania from 1922 to 1950. He graduated with an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1908. He was Executive Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia from 1949 to 1952.
