Scope and Contents

This small collection consists of handwritten notes and letters. The first few pages of notes are written on the backs of scrap Army Field Service: Infectious Diseases forms, and include subsequent handwritten addendums with notations on where they belong in the notes. The letters indicate that Bradbury and Krumbhaar intended their findings to be shared with authorities in the management of the Influenza Pandemic, and through publications.

Biographical / Historical

Edward Bell Krumbhaar (1882-1966) was a distinguished pathologist and cardiac physician, as well as one of Philadelphia's leading historians of medicine. A founder of both the Section on Medical History of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the American Association of the History of Medicine (AAHM), Krumbhaar also served as president of the College and AAHM. Immediately after obtaining his medical degree in 1916, Krumbhaar served as the resident pathologist at the Pennsylvania Hospital. Samuel Bradbury (1883-1947) was a doctor of internal medicine whose work and accomplishments produced key studies, disease identification and articles in areas ranging from infectious diseases to autonomic nervous disorders, and led to several high-level positions in educational and medical institutions. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1905. He became a fellow at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1929.

At the time Bradbury and Krumbhaar created the documents in this collection, both were captains in the United States Army Medical Corps.
