Scope and Contents
The Records of the Anti-Vaccination Society of America consist of one bound volume containing the Society’s certificate of incorporation (1885), their constitution and bylaws, and meeting minutes beginning in 1889. Also included is one folder of correspondence, reports, and other documents relating to the Society’s work. This includes an “Act To provide for a commission to investigate the nature and value of vaccination, anti-toxine, seropathy and other alleged prophylactics, and to appropriate a sum of money for its expenses” with handwritten edits.

Biographical / Historical
The Anti-Vaccination Society of America was founded in 1879, following a visit to the United States by British anti-vaccinationist William Tebb. The Society was active through the 1910s and opposed compulsory smallpox vaccination, also publishing a periodical called Vaccination. Members of the Anti-Vaccination Society of America were in contact with other anti-vaccination societies, including the American Anti-Vaccination League in New York and societies in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts, and in England. Members included Frank D. Blue, W. B. Clarke, Dr. A. J. Clausen, Porter F. Cope, Dr. E. B. Foote, Montague Leverson, L. H. Piehn, William Tebb, E. C. Townsend, Alexander Wilder, and Louis J. Weyprecht.
