Collection of Civil War documents

Collection of Civil War documents contains five items from Union soldiers during the Civil War. Those items include a letter from Union Pvt. Edward James White to his sister, dated August 28, 1864. Pvt. White belonged to Pennsylvania’s 8th cavalry. Along with this letter are a typed transcription, historical comments, and a brief biography of Pvt. White provided by Cohasco, Inc. There is also a letter from an unnamed Union soldier to his wife from September 5, 1862. Collection also contains a general order from Assistant Adjutant General (AAG) George B. Drake regarding the formation of an “Invalid Batallion for the Corps d’Afrique in this Department,” dated August 28, 1864. The order pertains to discrimination against the Corps d’Afrique. Additionally, collection includes an invoice for supplies for Maj. J.E. Bryant, 1st Mississippi (Vol. Infantry) of AD (African descent), signed by 1st Lt. Eben F. Cutter, R.Q.M. of same troops. Finally, collection includes an album containing over 180 prescriptions of Civil War physicians from February – March 1864, attributed to Cecil County, Maryland near Rising Sun, a railroad town southeast of Gettysburg. Some of the slips of paper include patient names.
