Biographical / Historical

Emlen Wood was born on 27 February 1889. He received an M.D. in veterinary medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1916. After graduation he entered the U.S. Army and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Pennsylvania Calvary Unit and was a member of the Mexican Border Service. During World War I, he served as a Captain in the Veterinary Division of the U.S. Army 28th Division. After the war, Wood took up residence in Charleston, S.C. and became the Assistant State Veterinarian for South Carolina. No information beyond 1922 could be found for Emlen Wood.

Edward Tyson Reichert was born in Philadelphia on 5 February 1855 and died on 25 December 1931 in St. Petersburg, Florida. He received his M.D. from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1879 and was immediately employed by his alma mater as a Demonstrator in Experimental Therapy (1879-1884) and an Assistant in the Nervous Dispensary (1879-1880). He later held the positions of Demonstrator of Physiology (1884-1886) and Professor of Physiology (1886-1920). He was an active medical researcher who studied respiration, circulation, the animal heat mechanism and hemoglobins. He assisted Edward Muybridge in his pioneer work on animal motion and moving pictures. He also was one of the first inventors of the storage battery plate. Reichert was a member of the American Medical Association and was elected a Fellow of the College of Physicians on 7 October 1885.
