Scope and Contents
Volume compiled by Caspar Morris during residency at Pennsylvania Hospital with descriptions of five
cases, 18241826,
and observations concerning Philadelphia Board of Health’s report on epidemic of
bilious remittant fever in Bristol, Pa., in 1825. Two cases were head injuries; description, circa 1849, of
later medical history of one patient, B. L., included.

Biographical / Historical
Caspar Morris, Philadelphia physician, was born on 2 May 1805. He was a greatgrandson
of physician
Caspar Wistar. Morris married Anne Cheston in 1829; they had six children, including physician J.
Cheston Morris (18311924).
Caspar Morris died on 17 Mar. 1884. Morris received his M.D. from the
University of Pennsylvania in 1824 and also studied in the office of Joseph Parrish. From 1824 to 1827,
he was a resident at Pennsylvania Hospital. In 1828, he became Physician at the Philadelphia
Dispensary. He was also Physician to the House of Refuge (18321834),
and lectured at the Philadelphia
Medical Institute (18381844)
and Philadelphia Hospital (18561858).
Morris helped establish the
Pennsylvania Institute for the Instruction of the Blind, and was a physician, manager, and vicepresident
there. He was also a manager of Episcopal Hospital. Morris retired from active practice in 1871. He was
elected to fellowship in the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1839.
