Scope and Contents
Two volumes of notes taken by Jacob Jeanes on the beginning lectures by Nathaniel Chapman on the practice of medicine delivered in the winter session of 1821-1822. Vol. 1 (225 pages) contains lectures on fevers. Vol. 2 (251 pages) contains lectures on hemorrhages and diseases of the digestive system. Vol. 2 also bears note “corrected in the winter of 1822-1823” and has many pencil annotations.

Jacob Price notes on the lectures of Thomas D. Mütter

Price’s notes are interleaved with Thomas D. Mütter’s Syllabus of the course of lectures on principles and
practice of surgery (Philadelphia, 1847) and expand on printed text. Notes occur in chronological order
from 23 October 1848 through 22 February 1849 and consider inflammation, wounds, diseases of bones and
joints, abdominal wounds, syphilis, and amputation. There are also a few pages of Price’s review notes,
dated February [1849?].

show his concern not only with physical disease but also with
social ills.The first, submitted to the Censors of the Philadelphia Medical
Society in application for junior membership in 1816, discusses
the causes of injuries to the medulla spinalis or spinal
injuries which exhibit no visible fractures. The essay examines
