Joseph Hines correspondence

Overview Joseph Hines was born 25 December 1835 in Hardwick, Vermont, to Nathan Hines and Martha (Griffin) Hines. By the time he was 18, in 1854, he was working for a Mr. Page, selling patent medicine (pills) throughout Wayne, Bradford, and other northern counties in Pennsylvania. Later, Hines was a druggist and stationer in Athens, Pennsylvania; by 1884, he had bought the business from a Dr. H. L. Gibbs. He was elected burgess of Athens in 1894. Hines died 15 June 1917 from pneumonia....

Joseph Horn treatise on urine and astrology

Scope and Contents Student treatise on urine, citing classical authorities, including Galen and Hippocrates. Several spelling corrections in different hand. Treatise describes conditions of urine, particularly color and sediment, with reference to specific diseases and relationship of planets to illness and recovery. The name "Joseph Horn" and supposed date of treatise inscribed on back board of volume.

Scope and Contents One volume of illustrations and descriptions of anatomical anomalies found in the dissecting rooms of the University of Pennsylvania during the academic session 1875-1876. Depictions of the anomalous and normal states are drawn side by side. Each description mentions the name of the dissector, if known. Prominent dissectors include Profs. Lenox Hodge and Joseph Leidy.

Joseph Leidy notes of a post mortem examination of W. E. Horner

Scope and Contents Leidy describes condition of W. E. Horner’s internal organs at time of death on 13 Mar. 1853; emphasis placed on heart and kidneys. Horner died of enteroperitonitis.
