             The collection contains correspondencem typescripts, ephemera, 
photogrphs and slides, memoranda, and records of operations. It 
documents the career of Murtagh and many of the operations and 
procedures within the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania 
(HUP), the hospital at Temple University, and the College of

             The John Ashhurst Papers collection documents the life and professional career of Dr. John Ashhurst from 1846 to 1901. Overview
             Presbyterian Hospital was founded in 1871 by the Alliance of Philadelphia Presbyteries as a 45-bed facility on 2.5 acres.  The incorporators declared the purpose was “to provide medical and surgical aid and nursing for the sick and disabled...” Care and nursing was granted to the indigent of Philadelphia, funded by donations from individuals and Presbyterian churches, to fulfill its Christian mission.              This collection of Thomas R. Neilson's papers touches on  many 
areas of the professional career and personal life of this Philadelphia 
physician, surgeon, and teacher.  The bulk of the collection,

Neilson was approaching middle age and was well advanced in
