Scope and Contents

From the Collection: This small collection of letters, pathological specimen registers, speeches and writings, and miscellaneous material, 1903-1963, documents the career and obstetric and gynecological practice of Edward A. Schumann.

Series 1 contains three folders of letters, 1916-1958, from, primarily, obstetricians and gynecologists. The letters concern Schumann's speaking engagements; his presidency of the American Gynecological Society; his appointment as professor of gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine; publication of Schumann's A textbook of obstetrics (1936); and personal matters. The series includes one letter from Martha Gellhorn.

Three registers of pathological specimens from the Gynecean Hospital, 1903-1907, are in Series 2. Indices to specimen numbers are included. Most entries contain detailed descriptions, drawings of the specimens, and notes on the history of the case. Edward A. Schumann was Pathologist at the Gynecean Hospital during this period.

A collection of Schumann's typescript speeches and writings, primarily unpublished, 1921-1955, is in Series 3. Manyjitems concern topics in obstetrics or gynecology or the profession of a gynecologist. The series also includes several addresses to graduating classes of nurses; biographical memoirs of George Gellhorn and John A. McGlinn; and Schumann's history of the Woman's Hospital in the State of New York.

Series 4 contains miscellaneous material, 1936-1963, including a photographic print of Edward A. Schumann; programs from meetings of the American Gynecological Society; Schumann's research on the history of obstetrics, particularly Francois Mauriceau, Hugh Chamberlen, and the Hotel Dieu; and material from the 50th anniversary meeting of the American Gynecological Club, including a photographic print, and membership roster, minutes, program, and Houston S. Everett's typescript history of the organization.
