 Series

Scope and Contents

From the Collection: Organized into four series: I. Manuscripts, 1940 & 1955. II. Typescripts, 1921-1941. III. Galley proof[n.d.] IV. Reprints, 1920-1945.

The collection contains manuscripts, 1940 & 1955, typescripts, 1921-1941, a galley proof, [n.d.], and reprints, 1920-1945, documenting Dr. Edward L. Bauer’s career with the Department of Health of the City of Philadelphia. The collection also contains a few items post-dating Dr. Bauer’s employment at the Department of Health. Series 1 consists of a spiral notebook containing manuscripts of two lectures given by Dr. Bauer. Both manuscripts post-date Dr. Bauer’s career at the Department of Health. The first lecture, "Rheumatic infection in children," was read in Atlantic City, N.J. before the New Jersey Medical Society on 4 Jan. 1940. It was later published in the society’s journal. The second lecture, "Immunization against communicable diseases in childhood," was most likely given at a 1955 postgraduate medical seminar in which Dr. Bauer took part. The largest series is the second, which contains typescripts of the many articles and lectures Dr. Bauer wrote and gave while working at the Department of Health. Some typescripts post-date Dr. Bauer’s employment at the Department. The bulk of the typescripts concern diphtheria and immunization against the disease. Some typescripts are annotated. Subseries 2.17 contains four photographs, illustrating a case of Still’s disease, in addition to a typescript.

The third series contains a galley proof of Dr. Bauer’s article "A Survey of the community status of immunization in children." The galley proof is related to the typescript in subseries 2.23. Series 4 contains reprints of articles published by Dr. Bauer. None of the reprints are related to the material in Series 1 or 2.
