Scope and Contents
           
             This small collection consists of letters received by Samuel Stehman 
Haldeman from various correspondents, including C. B. Adams, 
Joseph Leidy, Josiah Clark Nott, and Noah Webster.  The letters 
concern matters of linguistics and natural history.
One item of particular interest in the collection is Joseph Leidy's description of a new genus of crustacean.

Biographical / Historical
           
             Samuel Stehman Haldeman, scientist and philologist, was born in 
Locust Grove, Pennsylvania, on 12 August 1812.  He married Mary 
A. Hough in 1835.  Haldeman died in Chickies, Pa., on 10 September 
1880.
Haldeman attended Dickinson College, then assisted Henry Darwin Rogers, geologist of Pennsylvania, from 1836 to 1842. He was professor of natural history (1851-1855) and professor of comparative philology (1868-1880) at the University of Pennsylvania. Haldeman also held teaching posts at the Pennsylvania Agricultural College and Delaware College.
