Scope and Contents note

This is a collection of papers of Donald L. Baxter. Materials include: correspondence; programs, annual reports and other printed materials; and photographs concerning Donald L. Baxter's membership with professional organizations and his attendance of meetings. Organizations include the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society of Dermatopathology, the Pacific Dermatologic Association, and the Society for Investigative Dermatology. The collection also includes a reel-to-reel audio tape of a talk by Dr. Howard I. Maibach and several framed portraits of colleagues. There is one folder of correspondence and printed material related to Baxter's association with the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

Biographical/Historical note

Donald L. Baxter (1927-1979) was a descendent of Gerardus Clarkson, one of the founders of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Baxter graduated from University of Richmond, and received his M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia in 1954. Baxter served in the Army for two years before college and then entered the Navy Medical Corps. At the time of his retirement in 1973 he held the rank of captain. He was certified in dermatology in 1961 and in dermatopathology in 1974. Baxter was Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine (Dermatology) at Hahnemann Medical College and a consultant to the Surgeon General of the United States Navy. He was a Fellow of the College of Physicians.
