Scope and Contents note

This is a collection of papers of several generations of the Brown family.

Materials include: medical notebooks of George W. Brown; medical school notebooks, financial and legal records, and travel journals of George Artemas Brown; and diaries, family photos, and notebooks of Susan Barnum Brown (Mrs. George A. Brown).

Materials in the collection related to George Percy Brown include: medical school notebooks, travel journals, garden journals, ephemera and scrapbooks; and a small amount of correspondence and printed material from the American Association on Mental Deficiency.

Mary E. Hicks Brown (Mrs. George Percy Brown) materials include: correspondence from family and friends (1930s-1970s); college scrapbook, 1911-1913; correspondence, invitations, and ephemera (removed from scrapbook); clippings; correspondence and notes on Brown and Hicks family genealogy; and diaries (1950s-1960s).

Durant Brown materials include: correspondence (1940s); school notebook; Navy recruitment materials; and family financial records such as stocks, estate accounts, and insurance. The collection also contains: photographs; playbills; newspaper clippings (many featuring images of buildings); and a small amount of information about local Barre cultural groups.

Portraits, glass slides, film negatives, and illustrations taken of/done by the Brown family make up a large portion of this collection.

Brown family members Catherine Wood Brown, Evelyn, Donald Romaine Brown, Ephraim Brown and Thomas all featured minimally within correspondence and photograph collection described above.

Biographical/Historical note

George W. Brown was a graduate of the University of New York Medical Department. He was the superintendent of the Elm Hill Private School and Home for the Education of Feeble-Minded Youth. Never accepting more than 100 residents, and remaining private, Elm Hill was run by the Brown family until it ceased operation. George Artemas Brown (1858-1942),who graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York (later Columbia Medical School), was the second Brown to become superintendent. George Artemas’ son George Percy Brown (1888-1971), who attended Yale and Harvard Medical School, was also a superintendent. Elm Hill closed in 1946.
