Overview

This collection consists of one volume of collected notes, lists, charts, and other medical information. Compiled by Dr. Joe Lex during his time in medical school at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio, this volume served a pocket treatment guide to keep information close at hand until it was mastered. It includes dosage charts, treatment protocols, information about conditions and diseases, diagnostic criteria, and other helpful information for students of emergency medicine.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Joseph R. Lex (1947-) was born September 24, 1947 in Springfield, IL. He served in the 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 5th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division as a medic from May 1968 to May 1969 in Vietnam. After honorable discharge, Lex earned an Associate Degree in nursing from Parkland Community College. He continued to medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio, followed by a residency in Emergency Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Lex spent 14 years as a community emergency physician before transitioning to academia in 2003. Between 2003 and his retirement in 2016 he held positions including Director of Resident Didactic Sessions, Director of Department, CME, and Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. He was a founding member of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine and has presented and published widely on topics related to emergency medicine. He is a docent at Laurel Hill Cemetery, which has inspired his podcast “All Bones Considered: Laurel Hill Stories” and his book, All Bones Considered: 52 Laurel Hill Women.
