Volume of lecture notes and notes on current medical journals and literature compiled by J. H.
Huddleston while a student at the Medical School of Harvard University, [ca. 18891890].
Primary
contents of the lecture notes concern surgery, clinical surgery, orthopaedic surgery, and the diseases of
children; many lectures were delivered at Boston City Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital as
part of clinical training for students. Lecturers include: Edward H. Bradford, Herbert L. Burrell, Arthur T.
Cabot, David W. Cheever, George W. Gay, Charles B. Porter, Thomas M. Rotch, Charles P. Strong, J.
Collins Warren, and Francis S. Watson. The lecture notes, arranged chronologically, cover an academic
year in the Medical School from October to April, probably 18891890,
from the third class. Most of
Huddleston’s reading notes concern orthopaedic surgical topics. Particular attention is paid to Richard
Barwell’s "A treatise on diseases of the joints".

Biographical / Historical
John Henry Huddleston, New York physician, was born in Boston on 11 July 1864. In 1894, he married
Mabel Parker Clark. Huddleston died on 30 Oct. 1915. Huddleston attended Harvard University,
receiving his M.D. in 1891. He then opened a private practice in New York in 1892. Huddleston was
Visiting Physician to the Gouveneur Hospital, Willard Parker Hospital, and Riverside Sanitorium, and
Consulting Physician to the United Hospital, Port Chester. He was a trustee of the New York State
Hospital for Incipient Tuberculosis, a director of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and Secretary
of the American delegation at the 14th International Medical Congress in 1903.
