Scope and Contents
One volume documents medical practice, 1847-1861, of J. H. Marsden, homeopathic physician in Adams County, Pa. Lists charges and payments, made often with goods or services, for each patient and information concerning occupation of each patient; bulk spans 1847 to 1861 with occasional entries through 1870s. One folder of material laid in ledger contains bills, receipts, promissary notes, and miscellaneous financial papers, 1851-1881. Index to ledger account names included.

Biographical / Historical
John Hatton Marsden, Adams Co., Pa., physician, was born in Sept. 1803 at New Oxford, Pa. He married
a Miss Grier in 1835; they had three children. Marsden died of diabetes on 27 Aug. 1883. Marsden
received his B.A. in 1825 and A.M. from Jefferson College. In 1829, he was ordained as a minister of the
Protestant Episcopal Church and was rector of Christ Church in Adams County, Pa., for twenty years. In
1847, he entered Jefferson Medical College and received his M.D. in 1848. His practice was based at
York Sulphur Springs, Pa. In 1849, Marsden became a covert to homeopathy and is said to have
introduced it into Adams County.
