Scope and Contents
The collection contains three ledgers, 1888-1902, documenting
the Hanover County medical practice of Hermann B. Anderson.
The ledgers list patients, reason for visit, and settlement
of account. An index to account names is included in each volume.
Two of the ledgers contain farm accounts for the years 1889-1890 and 1897-1901,
and one contains a separate section for "Negro accounts", 1895.

Biographical / Historical
Hermann Boerhaave Anderson, Hanover County, Virginia, physician,
was born in 1856; he married Jennie L. Butler in 1888. Anderson
died, following a stroke of paralysis, on 17 November 1924.
Anderson received an M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia in 1882. From circa 1886 to 1902, he practiced at Hewlett's, in Hanover County; by 1906, he practice was based at Noel, Va. He was a member of the Medical Society of Virginia.

Custodial History
The Hermann B. Anderson ledgers were purchased by the Historical
Collections of the College of Physicians ofPhiladelphia through
a gift from the Samuel Lewis Circle from Trotting Hill Park
Books on 26 January 1993. The ledgers were purchased in conjunction
with a ledger of Thomas B. Anderson, grandfather of Hermann
B. Anderson.
