Hiester recalls experience as student sent by Caspar Wistar to Germantown to report on outbreak of yellow fever among several families there, circa 1805. Letter describes physical situation of Germantown and location of houses of infected families.

Biographical / Historical

Isaac Hiester began the study of medicine with Caspar Wistar in 1805 and received an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1808. From 1809 to 1818, Hiester was quarantine master at the Lazaretto in Philadelphia. He practiced medicine in Reading, Pa., and, in 1824, became the first president of the Medical Faculty of Berks County. Hiester died in Reading on 12 Sept. 1855.
