Daybook of physician practicing in Gardiner, Me., and surrounding Kennebec County area, 1 Dec. 1865-20 June 1874. Internal evidence suggests volume documents medical practice of Thaddeus Hildreth. Several accounts charged for vaccinations and examinations of patients for life insurance companies. Includes farm and household accounts and monthly tallies of charges and fees collected. Includes pension examination reports on Civil War veterans with case histories, 1869-1870.

Biographical / Historical
Thaddeus Hildreth, Gardiner, Me., physician, was born on 1 May 1826; he married Ann M. Leavey, 1855. Hildreth died accidentally from the effects of tincture of aconite root on 25 Aug. 1880. Hildreth attended Bowdoin College, then received an M.D. from Dartmouth Medical School, 1856. He first practiced in Bath, Me., then removed to Gardiner, entering into partnership with G. S. Palmer. During the Civil War, Hildreth was a Surgeon with the Third Maine Infantry Regiment. After the war, he returned to practice in Gardiner, was its city physician and also examining surgeon for the U.S. Pension Bureau.
