This small collection consists of 16 manuscript pharmaceutical prescriptions with occasional typescript comments. The cards and the comments were attributed to Battin and Lunger Pharmacists, Philadelphia, by the donor. The physicians who signed the prescriptions include J. Harold Austin, Radcliffe Cheston, J. Clinton Foltz, Alvin R. McCarthy[?], John F. McCloskey, Frank M. Ramsey, Edward G. Rhoads, Fred A. Sutcliff, and Josephus T. Ullom.

This collection, formerly in the possession of Samuel W. Gross, contains circa 900 death or interment certificates written by Philadelphia area physicians from 1806 to 1835. The certificates, arranged in a rough chronological order, indicate the common causes and ages of mortality in the city during the early 19th century.Each certificate attests to the cause and date of death, giving the name and age of the deceased. In September 1883, the Board of Guardians of Philadelphia General Hospital decided to establish a training school for nurses. At first, the program could be completed in one year; eventually, the program was expanded to include three years of course work. By 1931, the school had certified almost 2,000 nurses.
