Overview
Edward H. Dixon (1808-1880) was a New York City surgeon. Dixon earned his M.D. from Rutgers Medical College in 1829 or 1830, and then studied material medica, theory and practice, and therapeutics under Dr. John Francis; and surgery under Dr. Alexander Mott. Afterwards, Dixon accepted positions at the Deaf and Dumb Asylum and House of Refuge. Overview
Joseph Hines was born 25 December 1835 in Hardwick, Vermont, to Nathan Hines and Martha (Griffin) Hines. By the time he was 18, in 1854, he was working for a Mr. Page, selling patent medicine (pills) throughout Wayne, Bradford, and other northern counties in Pennsylvania. Later, Hines was a druggist and stationer in Athens, Pennsylvania; by 1884, he had bought the business from a Dr. H. L. Gibbs. He was elected burgess of Athens in 1894. This collection of Ruschenberger's papers contains personal correspondence.
The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence from Ruschenberger
to his wife, Mary B. Wister, 1843-1848, and to his mother, Ann,
1826-1846. Although the correspondence with his wife is primarily
concerned with domestic issues, principally the birth of their daughter,
Fanny, these letters also describe a trip Ruschenberger made to Saratoga
